Jake Sorgen, guitar + Piano
Chicago and Online
Jake Sorgen is a Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist, composer, and songwriter whose work spans singer-songwriter albums, chamber music for a wide range of ensembles, scores for theatre, film, and podcasts, and sound design/audio production. He holds an MFA in Music Composition from the Vermont College of Fine Arts and was awarded a 2020 Composer's Fellowship and 2022 Audio Production Fellowship. In 2018 Jake was named the "Maverick Prodigy Composer" by the Maverick Concert Hall in Upstate New York and served as Composer in Residence and Artistic Associate for The Rogue Theatre from 2014-2019.
Jake's approach to teaching music - be it guitar, electric bass, piano/keys, saxophones, songwriting/composition, or audio production - is rooted in the understanding of how we learn rather than rote memorization. Technique allows us to understand theory which forms the bedrock of the way music interacts and impacts us. Jake's horizon is always set towards that impact and he utilizes technical and theory know-how as a means to achieve those ends, opening doors and asking more questions of his students than he answers.
